Honeymoon in Lake Garda
We love Italian food. And Ben had never been to Italy so we chose to go there for our honeymoon. We wanted a quiet, serene honeymoon where we could relax after the frantic preparations of the biggest party of our lives – it was a DIY wedding after all. I’d seen pictures of Lake Garda and I thought it looked beautiful. To further convince Ben, I even mentioned about Gardaland – a merlin theme park only a bus ride away. We booked a week in a gorgeous spa hotel – our friends will know how spoilt we are when it comes to spa days, so it was only right we booked a whole week of it for our honeymoon. Flying into Verona on the Tuesday afternoon after our wedding on Saturday, we were ready for a holiday. Sadly when we first got there, it was very overcast. Sure, there was a lake, but it wasn’t what I had imagined. We also realised our spa hotel was sort of in the middle of nowhere, which was a little too much peace and quiet in the pre-holiday season of early May. I’m getting all the initial disappointments across first. I thought I’d chosen a terrible place for our honeymoon. It was a good twenty minute walk to any sort of restaurants and cafes, there was no sun at all and what we had seen of the lake had been somewhat underwhelming for the both of us. I have to say, it was a good test in the first week of being married. Although I’d chosen and booked it all with Ben’s approval, I felt I was to blame and felt pretty rubbish. Especially after the highs of a stunning bank holiday weekend wedding that couldn’t have been more perfect. Needless to say, Ben was cool with it all. He stopped me from saying sorry all the time and we instead decided to just make the most of a holiday, together, with good Italian food and a beautiful spa. The good news, I’m pleased to say, is that by the third day the sun had appeared and the clouds had cleared away. Suddenly the picture perfect views I’d seen online were right before our eyes. Did I mention that Ben got us an upgraded room with a panoramic view of the lake? Well, yes, that helped too. In the end, we had an incredible honeymoon. I got to spend a fantastic week in Italy, one of my favourite places, with my brand new, gorgeous husband. The food was amazing, even if we did carb overload on pizza and pasta. We sipped wine in the trendy towns and villages, we tried out as many ice cream flavours as we could, we spent days and evenings relaxing in the spa, and, we even got a bit of a tan.
