Day 6

Disneyland Park, Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, Fireworks and Fantasmic!

We were now heading back out of Los Angeles city or beach territory to Anaheim – the lot for the original Disneyland parks created by Walt Disney himself back in the 1950s. Obviously a lot has changed since then, including the addition of another park opposite – California Adventure Park.

For the first day, using our two-day ticket which only allowed us to visit each park on each consecutive day, we opted for the original Disneyland Park.

Sadly the Sleeping Beauty castle was in the middle of refurbishment so it was surrounded by scaffolding as you can see in the photo above. Never mind, the parade is still as special as ever.

We made our way through each land, getting on as many rides as possible. The Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones Adventure, The Jungle Cruise, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disneyland Railroad, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Mr Toad’s Wild Ride, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, Autopia, Space Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, Nemo’a Submarine Voyage, Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters!

Many of them are similar to the ones we have visited at Euro Disneyland in Paris but there were some amazing highlights in Indiana Jone’s Adventure and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. We also thought the Nemo submarine was really impressive for it’s effects too!

We got fast pass tickets for Indiana Jones so we could ride it again later! Created in 1995, it was so immersive that you’d think it was a new ride.

For the evening, we stayed for the fireworks at 9pm, which also combined projection mapped buildings all down the iconic Main Street of Disneyland.

We had missed the earlier showing of Fantasmic and almost left to get the shuttle back to the hotel. Thankfully, we made a last minute decision to stay and we are so glad we did. Having seen Fantasia at Paris, we thought it was the same but it was even more impressive (if that’s even possible!) and the best way to end our first day at Disneyland.

Using the New Orleans Square and lake, Mickey and the team put on an amazing show including music and sound effects, fireworks and pyro, lighting and water effects, water projection, a massive Maleficent dragon, big boats and even action stunts on the Pirate ship!

Day 7

Disneyland California Adventure Park, World of Color Water Fountain show.

We were staying at the Majestic Garden Hotel which is only a short drive from the Disneyland resort.

On this day we headed to the other Disney park called California Adventure.

As fans of Pixar’s cars, we queued alongside young children to have our picture taken with Mater in Cars Land.

The rides at this park that we managed to get on were: Guardians of the Galaxy: Breakout, Incredicoaster, Toy Story Midway Mania, Ariel’s Under the Sea, Monster’s Inc Mike & Sully, Radiator Springs Racers, Goofy’s Sky School, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, and Soarin’ around the World.

Highlights for us included Guardians of the Galaxy (a very fun remake of the Tower of Terror), Radiator Springs Racers was really fun and Toy Story Midway Mania which is one of the best 3D game rides I’ve been on.

Also Soarin’ Around the World is well worth it for the stunning 3D views on a rare ride!

We ended the night watching the World of Colour water fountain display. Sadly, we didn’t realise the best views come from reserved fast pass tickets so we didn’t get a great view but it was still enjoyable.

Day 8

Universal Studios Theme Park, Studio Tram Tour.

Today we checked out of the Disney hotel and headed towards Los Angeles central and towards Universal Studios.

I was very excited about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter so we headed towards that side of the park. It was pretty busy as it’s a great attraction and we ended up queuing for 75mins for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and 30mins for the Flight of the Hippogriff. The Forbidden Journey was very well designed and actually quite dark!

After this we headed to see a show for Animal Actors, which was fun and amusing! Everyone loves a performing animal right?

Carrying on, we headed for the World Famous studio tour. Sadly the park was due to close at 6pm so we had a lot less time than Disney days to get around the attractions.

We also got on The Minions Ride and The Mummy Returns. We were going to visit the Simpsons ride and the Special Effects show but we just didn’t have enough time and the last show was full up as we got there too late! Never mind.

That was the end of our day at Universal, but our sightseeing in Los Angeles was really only just beginning.

As we were nearby, we headed to Griffith Park and it’s beautiful observatory to see a Planetarium show. But you can read about that on the next blog!
